Joss Whedon- the Oscar(r)- and Emmy-nominated writer/director responsible for the worldwide television phenomena of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel-now applies his trademark compassion and wit to a small band of galactic outcasts 500 years in the future in his feature film directorial debut, Serenity.


The film centers around Captain Malcolm Reynolds, a hardened veteran (on the losing side) of a galactic civil war, who now ekes out a living pulling off small crimes and transport-for-hire aboard his ship, Serenity. He leads a small, eclectic crew who are the closest thing he has left to family - squabbling, insubordinate and undyingly loyal.


When Mal takes on two new passengers-a young doctor and his unstable, telepathic sister-he gets much more than he bargained for. The pair are fugitives from the coalition dominating the universe, who will stop at nothing to reclaim the girl. The crew that was once used to skimming the outskirts of the galaxy unnoticed find themselves caught between the unstoppable military force of the Universal Alliance and the horrific, cannibalistic fury of the Reavers, savages who roam the very edge of space. Hunted by vastly different enemies, they begin to discover that the greatest danger to them may be on board Serenity herself.


The film is based on Whedon's critically acclaimed, short-lived television series Firefly, which aired on the FOX TV Network during the fall of 2002. Set in a futuristic, post-Earth universe dominated by a planetary Alliance, the series chronicled the adventures of the ragtag spaceship Serenity and her eclectic crew of outcasts, led by Captain Malcolm 'Mal' Reynolds, played by NATHAN FILLION. Although FOX TV cancelled the show after only 11 of the 14 produced episodes had aired, Firefly's quirky mix of humor, complex characters and sci-fi had attracted a loyal and passionate following.


Serenity is written and directed by Joss Whedon; produced by Barry Mendel; and executive-produced by Christopher Buchanan, David Lester and Alisa Tager.

im not a fan of the cover art

at least FOX was able to put them all on the cover

i think i must be one of the few folk who actually really liked the cover. go figure

im also not a huge fan of this dvd cover for a few reasons...
1. river, just doesnt look like... well river!!! river is a mentally unstable 17 year old girl!! shes not supposed to be all sexy and covered in make up!!
2. why is serenity shooting what looks like lasers? serenity doesnt have weapons!!
3. did i sleep through the part with that big army looking group of people (and a duck and a llama)?
4. hey, wheres jayne? (ok....thats a selfish reason but me likes me some jayne!!)

but to each his own i guess
and hey... australias cover is apparently different so maybe over here in the uk we'll get a different one too so i might just be being silly....
And its whats inside that counts!! im just happy theres a film or dvd at all!!

i know some fans actually just made they're own covers for the dvd

hehehehehe.... the first thing my friend said after i got her to watch serenity was, where was the big ass army on the cover ;D i have taught her well
