TITLE: Dr Jekyll & Mr Hyde
YEAR: 1999
CHARACTER: Dr Henry Jekyll
REVIEWD BY: Flo
BRIEF PLOT OUTLINE:
Dr Henry Jekyll (Adam Baldwin) and his wife Muriel are spending their honeymoon in Honk-Kong. While visiting a local hospital Dr Jekyll is forced (at gunpoint) to save a member of a Chinese gang. He fails. The bad guys aren’t too happy. They kidnap the couple, take a kidney from each and blow them up. The couple. The kidneys will serve their organ black market. Muriel dies while Henry is saved by a martial arts and Chinese medicine expert, who happens to live on a boat. Not that it’s relevant for the story or anything.
Meanwhile, a Chinese cop and an American cop, both trying to uncover the organ dealers, are forced to work together. They don’t get along, but then *surprise* *shock* they get along, because it turns out the American cop is here because his partner was killed by the organ dealers!!!
On a boat Henry Jekyll is brought back to health and taught Chinese medicine and martial arts by his saviour. He now goes under the name of Mr Hyde. One night, in a pretty vengeful mood, he mixes some dangerous herbs. The mixture turns him into a merciless beast with glowing eyes: the Tiger. Surprisingly enough, the mixture also makes his hair a few inches longer. Eventually, Mr Hyde learns of the Prophecy: the Tiger shall be born and rid the world of a most powerful evil known as the Dragon.
My review:
My first thought when I saw Adam Baldwin on screen was ‘TOO MUCH HAIR!!’. Thankfully it gets better a third into the film.
On the whole, the plot is unsurprising. The acting is good (except the American cop: overacting much?), but the dialogues are not helping anything. About Adam: it’s pretty much what I just said (though the hair didn’t help either at the beginning!).
ADAM’S PERFORMENCE:Though it’s not a memorable movie, but I did appreciate it as 2 hours of entertainment and, well, it *is* a movie with Adam Baldwin after all. :-)
