Q [to cast]: How much do you all add to the dialogue? Or is it all Joss?
Nathan: Joss is far more clever than I am. From time to time I would go to Joss with an idea about how to do a scene. He would say 'thank you. Now here's how we're going to do it.'
Summer: Joss is boss.
Joss: That's our motto.
Adam: I had all kinds of ideas about how to do things, and mostly Joss would shoot them down. Then I'd go and do it my way anyway.
Joss: Adam had millions of suggestions. I've come to love the way Jayne in the background is always moving, always touching something. It makes the character much more real.
Q: I heard Carter Burwell was fired; does that open up the possibility of Greg Edmondson doing the music?
A: No. I was a fan of Carter Burwell since college, but, I won't say he was totally wrong for the project, but we just didn't mesh the way I had hoped. We have David Newman [sp?] doing the music now, he has a tremendous amount of experience, and a real musical vision. Just the other day I listened to a theme he had written for River, and it was almost beautiful enough for River.
Q: What is the origin of the Reavers?
A: Every story needs an Other. In the westerns, that was the Apaches. The Reavers are a non-racial version of that, in that anybody who goes far enough out and goes crazy can be a Reaver.
Q [follow-up]: Were you aware of a Scottish clan called the Reavers, who lived by raiding their neighbors?
A [looking guiltily skyward]: Totally. [says some things in a Scottish brogue, which isn't bad (to my ear anyway)] No, I really didn't know that.
Q: Is it true that Sailor Moon was the inspiration for Buffy?
A: I've never seen Sailor Moon, Cowboy Bebop, or Red Dwarf. I think they're all great anyway. I just haven't seen them.
Q: Just wondering, do you have a general foot fetish, or is it just Summer Glau's feet you have a fetish for?
A: I like to look at her feet. That doesn't make it a fetish!
Q [to Nathan]: A friend of mine swears he heard you say 'it's okay, I have my space pants on' [Nathan, who is drinking from an Aquafina bottle, spits it out laughing] but it's not in any episode. But recently I saw a banner that referred to 'space pants'. Was that line actually in one of the out-takes or something?
Nathan, after he stops laughing: No.
Joss: Your friend needs professional help.
Q [to Nathan]: You were great as Caleb, and you're great as Mal. What do you draw on to create such mean characters?
Nathan [speaking dramatically, ponderously]: I go deep into the darkest, scariest corner of my soul. And I find the cold, miserable creature that lives there. And then I kick it in the nuts.
Q [to Summer]: What did you draw on for the character of River?
Summer: My memory of when I was 15. I know her.
Q: From your fans, here's an idea to think about: Serenity 3 - The Musical.
Joss: Maybe. We have the talent. We have one cast member who has the legs of a dancer.
Nathan: That's Adam.
Adam: And I have the voice of a rhino.
Q: I saw a band live the other night that did a cover of the Firefly theme [Henry J. Kaiser's Grooves of Mystery; Kaiser has been prominent in the Bay Area avant-garde music scene for a quarter century].
A: They owe me money. I think it's something like seven cents every time somebody plays it.
Q [to Summer]: From the clip, and from what I've read, it seems like River is more in control of her psychic abilities in the movie. Is that true?
Summer: She's more in control [period].
Q [to cast]: Were there any scenes where you thought Joss was just crazy when you were doing it, that you later watched and thought they worked?
Adam: Not really. I'm the one who's always trying to make things a little crazier.
Summer: I can't really talk about it because it's in the movie. But there was a scene that I was so embarrassed to do. I do whatever Joss tells me to do, but I didn't want to do it, it was just so embarrassing. I almost lost my temper.
Joss: Fortunately I was too drunk to notice.
Summer: But when I watched it, I thought it worked.
